BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB quarterback Chad Wilmott will miss the 2004 season and be redshirted after undergoing surgery Thursday on his right shoulder. Wilmott, a 6-4, 215-pound junior, enrolled at UAB last January after leading Butler County Community College to the 2003 NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) championship. He was named a junior All-American for last season as he threw for 2,284 yards and 24 touchdowns. Wilmott injured the shoulder in the championship game but participated in the Blazers' spring practice. He has had problems with the shoulder during UAB's preseason fall drills and the decision was made to proceed immediately with surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. Bill Garth at UAB Children's Hospital. "Hopefully, by Chad having this surgery done now, he can get healthy and be ready to go for spring practice," said UAB head coach Watson Brown.
