BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team will honor three fallen Birmingham police officers during the 2004 season by wearing patches on the front of the squad's jerseys. The patch, which displays the badge numbers of Charles Bennett, Harley Chisholm, III, and Carlos Owen, will be worn for the first time this Saturday (6:00 p.m.) when UAB opens its 2004 season against Baylor at Legion Field. Officers Bennett, Chisholm and Owen were killed June 17 in the line of duty. "This was such a tragedy for the families of these dedicated officers, as well as this community," said UAB director of athletics and head coach Watson Brown. "We wanted to honor the officers and their commitment, as well as demonstrate our support to the families of the victims. Hopefully, in a small way, these badges will serve as a symbol to show that."
