BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB football team continued its preparations for the start of the 2004 fall campaign here Monday afternoon as they practiced for over two hours in shorts and helmets. The Blazers, which also practiced for slightly over an hour on Sunday, practiced in mild and overcast conditions. "The guys were a little sloppy but the effort is there," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "It's going to be sloppy on both sides when you begin a season, but we just have to be patient." One of the things that has gone good at the start of this year's practice has been the weather. The team practiced in mild conditions on the afternoon yet again, as the temperature was in the mid 80s with an overcast sky. "The weather has been wonderful," said Brown. "That really doesn't bother me at all because we know we are going to get our heat. We just have to work as hard as we can in these great conditions." UAB's first test will come on Saturday, Sept. 4 (6:00 p.m. CT) when the Blazers play host to Big XII Conference foe Baylor. The Bears are coming off back-to-back 3-9 seasons in 2002 and 2003. It will mark the second consecutive year the Bears and Blazers have opened the season against each other. UAB opened the 2003 campaign with a 24-19 come-from-behind victory over Baylor in Waco, Texas. The highlight of the game came in the waning seconds when UAB quarterback Darrell Hackney threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Nick Coon to win the game.
