BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB football held its first practice of the 2004 season here Friday afternoon as they practiced for over two hours in shorts and helmets. The Blazers return a total of 21 starters and 53 letterwinners from the 2003 squad. "We're really excited to get the season going," said Brown. "I think this is our best football team in my 10 years here. There is no doubt that we're good enough to win the league. If we play well, we can win every game. We are capable enough to do that. The tough part for us is our schedule. We play 11 tough opponents, including an ACC opponent, an SEC opponent and a Big 12 opponent, plus eight conference games that are always competitive." The Blazers will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 4 (6:00 p.m. CT) when UAB hosts Baylor at Legion Field. In addition to facing Baylor, the Blazers will have home games against Memphis (9/25), TCU (10/15), USF (11/3) and Houston (11/13). Two of the five home games on the season will be televised to a national audience when TCU (Oct. 15, 7 p.m. on ESPN) and USF (Nov. 3, 6 p.m. on ESPN2) come to town. UAB will be televised nationally for a third game when it opens the road schedule at nationally-ranked Florida State (5:30 p.m. CST, Sept. 18) on ESPN2. The Blazers also have road games versus Cincinnati (10/2), Mississippi State (10/9), Tulane (10/23), Army (11/20) and Southern Miss (11/27).
