BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team practiced for approximately two hours and 40 minutes in helmets and shorts Saturday in warm and humid conditions. The majority of the practice consisted of a substitution scrimmage. The Blazers duplicated a game-day situation with the practice and worked on all phases of their game. UAB head coach Watson Brown was pleased with the days efforts and talked about the importance of having this type of practice. "It was good," said Brown. "This one is always a day that opens everyboyd's eyes to let them know that we are not there yet. You have substitution issues, and you have to watch the 25-second clock, and you have to get your different punt and kicking teams on and off the field. We had some rusty things that were made aware today by doing this and we'll get them better and be ready to go by next Saturday. "There was not one piece of something that could happen in a game that we don't at least line up in and make them aware of. In my opinion, it may be the most important practice you have and yet you are in shorts. It gets them into rhythm and shows them how you have to do side-line procedure. We go through warmups like we would before a game. We do basically everything that you do in a ballgame." UAB will take Sunday off and return to the practice field Monday for a workout in shoulder pads and shorts. "We will get just a tad more work against each other Monday and Tuesday," said Brown. "We then completely back it off for the rest of the week in shorts." UAB opens the season at home Saturday against Baylor. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Legion Field.
