BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB senior Zac Woodfin has been named to the Preseason Watch List for the 2004 Butkus Award, which goes annually to the nation's best collegiate linebacker. The Butkus Award is presented each season by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Inc. (DACO). There were 90 candidates named Thursday to the preliminary list with seven being tabbed from Conference USA. Woodfin, a 6-2, 240-pound product of Prattville, Ala., came into his own last season in his second year as a starter for the Blazers and became one of C-USA's leading defensive performers. He earned first-team all-conference honors in 2003 and broke the single-season UAB record for most tackles with 149, eclipsing the mark of 120 he established a year earlier as a sophomore. He is currently tied for No. 2 all-time at UAB in tackles with 276 and enters 2004 just 13 shy of the record number of 289. Woodfin was named to the 2004 preseason All-Conference USA team (by the head coaches and league media) and was tabbed to the 2004 "Watch LIst" for the Bronko Nagurski Award. Woodfin is joined on the Butkus Watch list by fellow C-USA players Michael Boley of Southern Miss, Jamar Enzor of Cincinnati, Robert McCune of Louisville, junior Chris Moore of East Carolina and sophomores Wade Koehl of Houston and Stephen Nicholas of USF.
