BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB football team wrapped up its two-a-day practice schedule on Wednesday as the Blazers practiced in full gear for just under two hours. The team worked out on one of the hottest days yet during fall camp. The university will begin classes for the fall semester on Thursday so the team will begin practicing just once a day. Including Thursday, the Blazers will practice seven more times before its season-opener next month. UAB will hold its annual Fan Day on Fri. Aug. 20 and will also scrimmage that day. The Blazers will also scrimmage on Aug. 28. "The heat helped us today, we need this, and now we can get some pad work in heat and it will probably get a little warmer," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "This is about what we will get at 6 o'clock for Baylor, so this is good work for us today." UAB worked on all facets of the game during Wednesday's practice and continued to build up its stamina in the afternoon heat. "I think they were tired today, I think they are tired because we have worked them hard and their legs are tired," said Brown. "The heat bothered them a tad today in my opinion, but that is why you have to do it and now the next time we will be a little better at it and the same goes for the next time after that. You have to get heat work, there is no doubt about it." The Blazers will open their 2004 season at home on Sept. 4 when they take on Baylor at Legion Field. The game will kick off at 6 p.m. CST.
