BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB football team continued practice here Tuesday as the team trained for a little under two hours. The Blazers practiced in full pads on the afternoon in muggy and overcast conditions. UAB will continue their workouts Wednesday with the last two-a-day practice coming at 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The university will begin classes on Thursday, therefore the football team will return to practicing just once a day. "This is the week where we have got to get better," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "We want to have one more good week of fundamentals before we start working on the Baylor gameplan. This is a very important week and I have always thought the last week of two-a-days are the most important." Tuesday's workout continued from Monday as the team concentrated on basic fundamentals and getting the newcomers familiar with the Blazers' offensive and defensive systems. Brown is also making sure the players continue training mentally as well as the physical workouts. "This is when you make your team," Brown continued. "We have been lucky with the weather because it hasn't been as hot as years past, but it will get hot again. The players are tired and worn out physically, but mentally they have got to remained focus. Mental toughness is a huge piece of this game and right now is when you build that. You can't build that in the fourth quarter of the Baylor game; that is something you build right now on the practice field and that's why they have to push themselves to get through it." The Blazers will open their 2004 season on Saturday, Sept. 4 (6:00 p.m. CT) when they meet Big XII Conference foe Baylor at Legion Field.
