BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team practiced for two and a half hours Saturday, highlighted by a two hour scrimmage. The scrimmage was the Blazers' first of fall practice. UAB head coach Watson Brown was pleased with the play of the first-team offense and defense, but also saw some inconsistencies in the team's overall play. "It was was what I expected," said Brown. "We were inconsistent. I knew it would be that way. I thought there were some good plays and some bad plays. I thought the first offense did pretty well. I thought our first defense was good. After that, I thought it was really inconsistent on both sides of the ball. We'll spend all day tomorrow studying this tape, so it's a big day for us coaches to really study each player. I told the kids that this was an individual day. This was for them to prove to us that they needed to be on our depth chart. Hopefully, the next scrimmage will be a little more technical and will start to look a little better." Junior quarterback Darrell Hackney, named to the preseason watch list for the 2004 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, was 6-for-9 on the day, passing for 102 yards. Hackney's lone touchdown pass came on a 48-yard strike to senior wide receiver Bradley Chavez. Chavez led all Blazer receivers with 80 yards on the day. Sophomore running back Dan Burks and junior college transfer Reggie Lindsey each had four receptions apiece. Senior placekicker Nick Hayes, named to the 2004 Lou Groza Award Preseason Watch List, was perfect through three field goal attempts and three extra-point tries. Hayes connected on field goal attempts of 49, 35 and 26 yards. Burks led all rushers, going 45 yards on six carries. Sophomore running back Bo Moncur had two touchdowns on the day and rushed for 44 yards on 10 carriers. Sophomore running back Marculus Elliott got the lion's share of the work out of the backfield, carrying the ball 14 times for 30 yards. Sophomore quarterback Curtis Falany went 11-for-16 for 84 yards, sophomore Chris Williams was 5-of-11 for 19 yards and newcomer Chad Wilmott went 3-for-5 for 26 yards. UAB will take a day off from the practice field Sunday to meet and watch tape from the scrimmage. The Blazers will continue with a two-a-day practice Monday. Monday's first practice will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the team will close the day with a workout at 4 p.m. The morning workout will be in shorts and the Blazers will don full pads for the afternoon practice. The Blazers' next scrimmage is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. at West Campus Field as a part of Fan Day activities. Immediately following the scrimmage, fans will be able to meet the 2004 Blazers during a photo and autograph session that will begin at 7:00 p.m. All fans who attend the autograph session will receive a free 2004 UAB football schedule poster for the players to sign. UAB opens the season at home against Baylor Sept. 4. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Legion Field.
