BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The first week of fall practice is in the books. The UAB football team finished up its first week of practice here Friday with a full-pad session that lasted a little under two hours. The Blazers had a light workout, concentrating mainly on second and third teamers, in preparation for the team's first intrasquad scrimmage of the season set for Saturday, Aug. 14, at 4 p.m. on the UAB practice field. Friday's practice may have been the best weather since the Blazers began practices on Aug. 6. The afternoon was cloudless and in the high 70s as the Blazers took the field for the afternoon session. "Practice went good today and the weather was perfect" said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "With the scrimmage on Saturday we wanted to go a little light this afternoon. We spent a lot of time with our third teamers and did all the physical work with them. We were able to give them a little work today that they haven't been getting." Brown also said the scrimmage on Saturday will be more of a personnel and technical scrimmage "We are going to go a little hard tomorrow, but we are going to hold off a little as well," Brown continued. "We need to find out some things about our players. We are familiar with some of the returnees, so we won't leave them in for long periods of time, but we will look more at the ones we need to focus on." Several players are expected to miss the Blazers' scrimmage - all for precautionary reasons. Bobby Keyes, Roddy White and Marcus Lampton will be held out of the full-contact scrimmage. None of the players' injuries are considered serious and all are expected to return to practice at some point next week. "The injuries are nothing serious," said Brown. "The players who will miss tomorrow are not ready to go in the scrimmage but they will be ready for Baylor." The Blazers will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 4 (6:00 p.m. CT) when UAB hosts Baylor at Legion Field.
