BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team hit the practice field in full pads for the first time as it continues preparations for the 2004 season. The Blazers were out on the field for over two and a half hours as the summer heat returned to the Birmingham area. "Today was great," said Brown. "It was physical. They got after each other. There were good things and bad things. I think it was a good day, but we have to do it tomorrow, the next day and the next day. This is just the first of many days in pads. Anytime you put the pads on for the first time, you get tired quick. You can condition all summer long, but there's a difference with pad conditioning." UAB will hold its first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday, August 14, at 4:00 p.m. on the practice field. "We'll be putting plays in all the way until Saturday," Brown said. "This is more of an installation time. We're really not bearing down on any one thing yet. Hopefully after the scrimmage, we can pick at some things and get better at them." The Blazers will host "Fan Day" on Friday, August 20, beginning at 5:00 p.m. with the Green & Gold scrimmage at West Campus Field. Immediately following the scrimmage, fans will be able to meet the 2004 Blazers during a photo and autograph session that will begin at 7:00 p.m. All fans who attend the autograph session will receive a free 2004 UAB football schedule poster for the players to sign. The Blazers will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 4 (6:00 p.m. CT) when UAB hosts Baylor at Legion Field.
