Men's Golf Ready For NCAA Regional

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's golf team opens play Thursday at the 2004 NCAA East Regional in New Haven, Conn. The Blazers, who are making their fourth Regional appearance in five years, will be competing on the par 70, 6,749-yard Yale Golf Course on the campus of Yale University.
"This is a great honor and I feel our guys are certainly ready to play," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "We are going to be playing on a very tough golf course in a very tough field, so we will have our work cut out for us."
The Yale course has been the site of every significant state championship, two USGA Junior National events, the 1991 NCAA Eastern Regional championships, the 1991 ECAC Men's Championship, and the 1992 ECAC Women's Championship. During the 1991 NCAA tourney, only 21 subpar rounds were recorded of the 360 played during the three days. The course has also been the home of the Nike Connecticut Open. In 1988, Golf Magazine ranked Yale as 71st among the 100 most difficult courses in the world.
The Blazers will be competing in one of the three, 27-team fields over the weekend of May 20-22. The 15th-seeded Blazers and will be joined by the top-five programs in the East: Florida, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech and South Carolina. Other Regional sites are West Lafayette, Ind. (Purdue) and Eugene, Ore. (Oregon).
Other schools competing in the East Regional include: Augusta State, Wake Forest, Duke, Tennessee, North Carolina, LSU, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, North Carolina State, Auburn, Vanderbilt, Georgia Southern, Penn State, Georgetown, Towson, Rhode Island, Maryland, Binghamton, Yale, Army and Long Island. The top 10 teams from the Regional will advance to the NCAA Championship on June 1-4 at Cascades Golf Course in Hot Springs, Virginia.
