UAB Men's Tennis Team Beats Memphis, 4-3

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas --- The UAB men's tennis team won four of six singles matches to take a 4-3 win against Memphis in the second day of competition at the 2004 HEB Collegiate Team Championships here Saturday.
UAB's Sanzaruz Zaman clinched the match for the Blazers with a three-set win over Memphis' Marten Tamla at the No. 5 position. Zaman went up early by winning the first set, 7-5. Tamla claimed the second set, 6-3, but Zaman fought back to win the third set, 6-4, to take the match.
The Blazers (9-3, 3-1) dropped the doubles point, by losing the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. At the No. 1 position, UAB's Andre Maier and Tobi Klein fell to the Tigers' James Spence and Lee Walker, 8-6. In the No. 3 spot, Memphis' Sam Withell and Alex Jago defeated the Blazers' Dino Mancarella and Sanzaruz Zaman, 8-4. The No. 2 match between UAB's Kristijan Mitrovski and Anton Mavrin and the Tigers' Alex Bucewicz and Luke Campbell did not finish.
UAB went into the singles competition down a point and needed to win four of six matches, which is exactly what they did.
At the No. 1 position, the Blazers' Klein was a 6-3, 7-6 winner over Memphis' Lee Taylor Walker. In the No. 2 tilt, UAB's Mavrin defeated the Tigers' James Spence, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. The Blazers' Mitrovski beat Memphis' Campbell, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 4 match.
Memphis (6-6, 1-3) tallied two singles wins. At the No. 3 spot, the Tigers' Bucewicz defeated UAB's Maier, 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 6 tilt, the Blazers' Mancarella fell to Memphis' Mark Finnegan, 6-4, 7-5.
With the score tied at three each, UAB needing one more victory when Zaman sealed the win with his 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 spot.
UAB will face Arkansas-Little Rock in the final day of competition at the HEB Collegiate Classic on Sunday.
