UAB Men's Tennis Defeats Northern Illinois, 4-3

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas --- The UAB men's tennis team took two of three doubles matches, for the doubles point, sealing a 4-3 win in its opening match against Northern Illinois at the 2004 HEB Collegiate Team Championships here Friday.
Due to a rain delay that lasted several hours, the match's format was altered so that singles action led off the event.
The two teams split the singles matches, winning three each. UAB (8-2, 2-1) tallied wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 positions, while Northern Illinois (5-3) won the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 tilts.
UAB's Tobi Klein won his No. 1 singles match against NIU's Willy Gali, 6-3, 6-3. At the No. 2 spot, the Blazers' Anton Mavrin was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Northern Illinois' Juan Pablo Barriga. UAB's Sanzaruz Zaman remained undefeated in dual action this season, tallying a 6-4, 6-2 win over the Huskies' Aaron Forsberg in the No. 5 slot. Zaman is now 10-0 on the season.
Northern Illinois' Martinez defeated the Blazers' Andre Maier, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3, in the No. 3 singles position. At the No. 4 spot, the Huskies' Jack Komar was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over UAB's Kristijan Mitrovski. NIU's final singles win came when Stephen Guntly beat the Blazers' Ivan Andreev, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The Blazers took the match by winning the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles points. At the No. 1 spot, UAB's Maier and Klein defeated the Huskies' Barriga and Martinez, 8-4. In the No. 3 tilt, the Blazers' Zaman and Dino Mancarella were 8-2 winners of NIU's Guntly and Komar. The No. 2 match between UAB's Mavrin and Mitrovski and Northern Illinois' Forsberg and Gali did not finish.
UAB will continue to participate in the HEB Collegiate Classic, as the Blazers take to the court again on Saturday.
