UAB Men's Tennis Defeats Hampton, 4-2

NORFOLK, Va. --- The UAB men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-2 victory over the Hampton Pirates on Friday as the Blazers rallied to take the doubles point and then posted three, straight-set victories in singles play to earn their second-consecutive win.
"This was a really good effort by our team today," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "We played very well in doubles and had some key wins in singles. I think that we performed well despite playing with a depleted team. Our No. 1 singles player, Tobi Klein, is out with an injury and so is our No. 5 player, Ruben Zrihen."
UAB (12-4) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Friday as the Blazers took two of the three doubles contests from Hampton (11-9) to earn the all-important doubles point.
In the No. 1 doubles match, UAB's combination of Andre Maier and Anton Mavrin defeated the Pirates' duo of Amine El Ouazzani and Ladislav Rezac, 8-6. With the win, the Blazers' pair improved to 1-0 on the season as a tandem. On court No. 3, Kristijan Mitrovski and Ivan Andreev of UAB defeated Hampton's combination of Alin Mihai Zorila-Ditoiu and Joao Sacamandi, 8-1.
The Blazers' Mavrin, Sanzaruz Zaman and Dino Mancarella all earned victories in singles play to hand UAB the crucial 4-2 road win.
Mavrin defeated the Pirates' Mihai Zorila-Ditoiu, 6-1, 6-2, on court No. 2, while Zaman upended Hampton's Valter Paiva in the No. 4 singles match, 6-1, 6-1. UAB's Mancarella also posted a straight-set victory on Friday as the Blazers' senior from Derendingen, Germany, breezed by Rezac, 6-3, 6-4.
The UAB men's tennis team will next be in action on Saturday as the Blazers remain in Norfolk, Va., to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs at 11 a.m. (CST).
