UAB Men's Tennis Beats Memphis, 4-2

NEW ORLEANS, La. --- The UAB men's tennis team beat Memphis, 4-2, in Match No. 7, here at one of the Conference USA Men's Tennis Shootouts. The other is currently being held at TCU.
UAB (7-2, 2-1), seeded fourth in the tournament, started off by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles tilts. The Blazers' tandem of Anton Mavrin and Kristijan Mitrovski defeated Memphis' Alex Bucewicz and Marten Tamla, 8-5, at the No. 2 position. In the No. 3 doubles spot, UAB's Dino Mancarella and Sanzaruz Zaman were 8-2 winners over the Tigers' Luke Campbell and Sam Withell.
The Blazers' lone doubles loss came in the No. 1 match, as UAB's Tobi Klein and Andre Maier fell to UM's James Spence and Lee Walker, 8-5.
UAB then won three of five completed singles matches for the victory. The Blazers' Klein was a 7-6, 7-6 winner over Memphis' Walker in the No. 1 slot. At the No. 4 position, Mitrovski of UAB beat the Tigers' Tamla, 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 6 match, the Blazers' Zaman defeated Memphis' Alex Jago, 6-3, 7-5.
Memphis (4-3, 0-2) took two singles wins, at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. In the No. 2 position, the Tigers' Spence was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over UAB's Mavrin. At the No. 3 spot, UM's Bucewicz defeated the Blazers' Maier, 6-3, 6-3.
The No. 5 match between UAB's Ruben Zrihen and Memphis' Withell did not finish.
Tulane won the Shootout, defeating USF, 4-0.
Next, UAB travels to Corpus Christi, Texas for the H.E.B. Collegiate Team Championships on March 5-7, 2004.
