BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB men's tennis team won its fifth match of the season as it defeated in-state foe,North Alabama, 7-0, here Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Sanzaruz Zaman improved to 6-0 in dual matches this season with his 6-1, 6-2 win over UNA's Ben Hestley,in the No. 5 singles position.
UAB (5-1) started the contest by sweeping the doubles matches. In the No. 1 spot, the Blazers' Toby Klein and Andre Maier defeated UNA's Vinnie Cayonette, 8-0. UAB's Kristijan Mitrovski and Anton Mavrin beat the Lions' Jordan Jones and Adam Loudermilk, 8-1, at the No. 2 position. Finally, in the No. 3 match, Dino Mancarella and Zaman of UAB were victorious over UNA's Glen Walkup and Bebo Dutton, 8-1.
The Blazers continued their winning ways on Wednesday by sweeping all six singles contests. In the No. 1 slot, UAB's Klein was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over the Lions' Jones, moving Klein to 4-1 on the season. At the No. 2 position, the Blazers' Mavrin defeated North Alabama's Cayonette, 6-4, 6-1. In the No. 3 tilt, UAB's Maier beat the Lions' Dutton, 6-1, 6-0.
The winning continued for UAB as Mitrovski beat UNA's Loudermilk, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot. The Blazers' final win came in the No. 6 slot where Ivan Andreev defeated the Lions' Walkup, 6-0, 6-0.
Next, UAB travels to New Orleans, La., for the 2004 Intra Conference USA Championships hosted by Tulane on Feb. 27-29.
