UAB Men's Tennis Falls At Mississippi State, 5-2

STARKVILLE, Miss. --- The UAB men's tennis team dropped its match with Mississippi State, 5-2, here on Thursday. The loss was the Blazers' first defeat of the season.
Things started out well for UAB (4-1) as the Blazers took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. UAB's Tobi Klein and Andre Maier defeated the Bulldogs' Luiz Carvalho and Jose-Carlos Pinto, 8-6, in the No. 1 spot. In the No. 3 match, the Blazers' Dino Mancarella and Sanzaruz Zaman were winners over MSU's Matt Armstrong and Romain Provenzano, 8-4.
The Blazers' only doubles loss came in the No. 2 slot, as Mississippi State's Romain Ambert and Florent Girod, who are tied for 32nd in the country, beat UAB's Anton Mavrin and Kristijan Mitrovski, 8-3.
Mississippi State (1-2) tied the score in the No. 5 singles contest, as the Bulldogs' Girod defeated UAB's Mitrovski, 6-3, 6-0. MSU took the lead and never looked back with a win in the No. 2 tilt, when Pinto defeated the Blazers' Mavrin, 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 4 match, Mississippi State's Max Fomine was a winner of UAB's Ruben Zrihen, 6-1, 6-4.
UAB's Andre Maier won the first set of the No. 3 tilt, but was unable to hold on, as the Bulldogs' Carvalho won. 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 1 contest, fourth-ranked Ambert handed UAB's Tobi Klein his first loss of the season, 7-6(9), 5-7, 1-0(7).
The Blazers' lone singles win came in the No. 6 slot, as the Blazers' Zaman was a winner over MSU's Provenzano, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(2).
Next, UAB will host North Alabama on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Brook Highland Racquet Club at 2 p.m.
