BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB's opponent for the Dec. 24th Sheraton Hawaii Bowl has now been set.
The Blazers will take on Hawaii on the Warriors' home turf at Aloha Stadium when they play in the Christmas Eve bowl game (2:00 p.m. HST).
UAB, which closed its regular season a week ago with a 26-21 loss at Southern Mississippi, a day later accepted an invitation to its postseason bowl game. The Blazers had to wait until the early hours of Sunday morning to find out who their opponent would be.
Hawaii, under head coach June Jones, secured its spot in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl with its come-from-behind, 41-38 victory over Michigan State. The Warriors (7-5) had kept its bowl hopes alive last week when they edged Northwestern, that game also being played in Aloha Stadium.
When UAB goes against Hawaii, the Blazers will be facing the NCAA's all-time passing yardage leader. Senior QB Timmy Chang became the career leader earlier this season and will enter the Hawaii Bowl with 16,667 passing yards. His favorite target is receiver Chad Owens who has 231 career receptions.
The Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, which will be televised nationally on ESPN, is shaping to be one of the postseason's most entertaining contests. Hawaii will feature the passing of Chang while UAB will bring its high-powered offense that features QB Darrell Hackney and wide receiver Roddy White.
