BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB wide receiver Roddy White, who set a Conference USA record this season for receiving yards in becoming one of the country's best offensive weapons, has been named to the 2004 Associated Press All-America Football Team, it was announced Monday.
White, from Charleston, S.C., was named to the AP third team and becomes only the second Blazer in the program's nine-year Division I-A history to earn AP All-America honors. Defensive back/return specialist Rodregis Brooks was named to the AP second unit following the 1999 season.
White will enter UAB's December 24th Sheraton Hawaii Bowl with 65 receptions for 1,339 yards and 13 touchdowns. His receiving yardage total established a C-USA record while his average (121.7) ranks No. 2 nationally. He is the only receiver in the nation averaging better than 20 yards per reception who has caught more than 60 passes.
White had seven games in 2004 in which he had more than 100 yards receiving. His 253 yards receiving against Tulane (on 10 receptions) was just six yards short of the C-USA record and was the second-highest single-game total in the NCAA this season.
White ranks No. 5 all-time in Conference USA in receiving touchdowns with 25 and he has a career yards per catch average of 19.1.
White was joined at wide receiver on the AP third team All-America squad by Oregon State's Mike Haas. The first team receivers were Michigan's Braylon Edwards and Purdue's Taylor Stubblefield. Named to the second unit at wide receiver were Dante Ridgeway of Ball State and Mark Clayton of Oklahoma.
White and his UAB teammates will depart Birmingham this Saturday, Dec. 18 en route for Honolulu where they will meet the Hawaii Warriors on Christmas Eve. The game will kick off at 2:00 p.m. HST and will be televised nationally by ESPN.
