TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The UAB cross country team ended its 2004 season with a ninth-place finish at the NCAA South Region Championships here on Saturday morning.
Freshman Elizabeth Hilligoss was the Blazers' top finisher as her time of 21:55.64 in the 6K race placed her 23rd overall. Hilligoss also earned a spot on the all-region team.
"As a team, we ran great," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "Elizabeth Hilligoss did a wonderful job and was the second freshman overall. You always hope to run your fastest race at the end of the season and that's what we did."
UAB's top runner, sophomore Elizabeth Ambrus, was disqualified from the race for running off the course. Ambrus was in third place with under 1,000 meters to go when the error occurred.
The top-four individual finishers qualify for Nationals.
"It's unfortunate for Elizabeth Ambrus to be disqualified," said Stanfield. "She has done a great job for us all year and I'm sorry to see her season end like this. She had a great shot at advancing to Nationals."
Freshman Whitney Mays placed 35th overall with a time of 22:17.35, while sophomore Jennifer Thompson was 59th, running the race in 22:41.84. Sophomore Ryanne Fortney finished in 79th, completing the course in 23:04.05. Petra Ivanova registered a time of 23:07.36, placing 82nd, while Genoah Collins was 83rd with a time of 23:07.72.
