BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team worked on its gameplan for Mississippi State for more than two hours here on Wednesday. The Blazers will face the Bulldogs for the first time ever on Saturday, Oct. 9 in Starkville, Miss., at 1:30 p.m. (CT).
"Practice was good," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "It was much better than yesterday. Good tempo, good improvement from yesterday as far as the gameplan is concerned. All the stuff we're doing looked better."
UAB (3-1, 2-0 C-USA) is looking for its third-straight victory, something the Blazers haven't done since the 2001 season. The Bulldogs, who are looking to halt a four-game losing streak, host UAB at Scott Field for their 2004 Homecoming.
Saturday's game will be the first meeting between the teams and the first of five to be played over the next seven years. Three of the games will be played in Starkville with two set for Birmingham. The teams will play at MSU in 2004, 2007 and 2010. They will square off in Birmingham during the 2006 and 2011 seasons.
The Blazers are coming off a 30-27 win at Cincinnati. Cedric Hampton's eight-yard touchdown reception from Darrell Hackney midway through the fourth quarter gave the Blazers the lead for good. In addition, Will Evans returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown and Nick Hayes kicked three field goals for UAB.
Mississippi State (1-4, 0-3 SEC) returns home for the first time in three weeks on Saturday. The Bulldogs are coming off a 31-13 loss to Vanderbilt last weekend. The Bulldogs have already had success against Conference USA opponents as they opened the season with a 28-7 win over Tulane.
The game will be carried live on the Blazer Sports Network (101.1 FM in Birmingham).
