BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB football team practiced for approximaely two-and-a-half hours on Tuesday in full gear as the Blazers were forced to work out indoors due to severe weather in the immediate area.
The Blazers, coming off a 41-25 victory over TCU on Friday at Legion Field, are 5-1 overall and atop the Conference USA standings at 3-0. UAB will play three of its final five games on the road, beginning with the game versus the Green Wave on Saturday in New Orleans, La. The game will kickoff at 2:30 p.m. CST from Tad Gormley Stadium and will be broadcast regionally on Comcast Sports Southeast.
Tulane is 1-4 and 0-3 in conference play after a 49-24 loss to Memphis last Saturday. The Wave have beaten the Blazers in each of the last two seasons, but the all-time series is tied at 2-2. The Blazers are currently ranked 24th in the first edition of the Bowl Championship Series standings, which were released on Monday.
The Blazers moved to Bell Gymnasium adjacent to the football practice facility due to heavy rain in the Birmingham area on Tuesday. UAB contiuned to fine-tune its gameplan for the Green Wave. UAB enters the contest with a 2-1 road record after defeating Mississippi State, 27-13, on Oct. 9 in Starkville, Miss.
"Well we had to move indoors and sometimes that is just what you have to do," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "Some days late in the year you have to do this because the weather starts turning, but I think we got what we needed out of it," said Brown.
"We got a lot of assignment work in and it is not as hard on you late in the year because your technique is close to being done well so your assignment work is more important at this point anyway."
"I am not concerned with our team losing focus, I am concerned with going on the road and trying to beat a Conference USA team," said Brown. "Anytime you go on the road it is a hard win and whoever wins the most of those is usually the one who wins a championship, so I am probably more concerned about that."
"We know what is at stake, because we can become bowl eligible so there is a lot at stake for us, but I am just focused on us going on the road and winning a game."
UAB will return home for a pair of games following the matchup with Tulane. The Blazers face USF (Wed. Nov. 3 ESPN2) and Houston (Nov. 13) before completing the season at Southern Miss on Nov. 27.
