MORRISTOWN, N.J. - The UAB football team, off to a 5-1 start including a perfect 3-0 mark in Conference USA play, is ranked No. 24 in the first edition of the 2004 Bowl Championship Series Standings. It was announced on Monday by the National Football Foundation and College Hall Of Fame.
The Blazers, coming off a 41-25 victory over conference-rival TCU on Friday in Birmingham in a game televised nationally by ESPN, are ranked for the first time in school history in any poll or set of rankings. UAB will face Tulane this Saturday in New Orleans, La., at Tad Gormley Stadium. The game will kickoff at 2:30 p.m. CST.
USC (6-0) is ranked No. 1 in the initial BCS rankings while Miami (Fla.) is No. 2 as the Hurricanes are also undefeated at 5-0. Oklahoma, Auburn, and Florida State round out the top five. The top two teams in the initial BCS rankings each season have never faced each other in the national championship game.
"The BCS ranking is fantastic," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "This is all over the country; everybody is looking at this first BCS ranking that has come out."
"We've got another tough game coming up," said Brown. "Today, though, it's a great honor for these kids."
Conference-rival Louisville is at No. 17 and is the only other C-USA team ranked in the BCS rankings. Louisville and UAB do not play each other this season.
The BCS National Championship Game will take place on Jan. 4, 2005 in the FedEx Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla.
