BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB football team worked out in shorts and helmets for nearly two hours on Thursday as the Blazers practiced one last time prior to Saturday's 6 p.m. matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
"I think that we're ready," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "We have a good gameplan put in and the team looked like it's ready to go. This was the first true normal week of practice that we've had this season and I think it went well."
After opening the season on the road at Baylor, UAB had only four days of practice time prior to its Conference USA opener against Southern Miss. The Blazers went into last week's intrastate contest versus Troy State with eight days of preparation under their belts.
UAB has an open date next week after Saturday's first-ever meeting with South Carolina.
"Next week we have an open date, but I think that it is very well-needed," Brown said. "We've had four very tough games. This is the fourth one. It will be extremely competitive and I think that the off week will be good for us to see where we are as a team. I think that it is a perfect time for us to have an open date."
With hurricane Isabel looming on the East coast, Coach Brown said that his team has been preparing for all kinds of weather this week.
"We've talked about the weather and we're prepared for anything. We know that we might play in rain. We might play in hard wind or we might play on a beautiful day. The thing (Isabel) can either clear out quickly or it can hang around awhile. We talked about that as a team and hopefully we're prepared for whatever."
The Blazers are scheduled to leave Birmingham at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Friday and will arrive in Columbia, S.C., in the early afternoon. UAB will then hold a brief walk-through at Williams-Brice Stadium prior to heading to the team hotel for the night.
UAB and South Carolina are set to square off in an intriguing non-conference matchup at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
