BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team practiced in good conditions on its third day of preseason workouts here Thursday. The Blazers practiced in shorts and helmets for two-and-a-half hours in sunny and mild weather.
"Today was not as good as our first two days," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "We have to learn to push through it a little better. It wasn't a bad practice, but the players weren't as into it as I thought we were the first two days. When your legs get tired, your mind gets a little tired. Maybe they're tired of shorts and are ready to go to pads. We'll get into shoulder pads on Friday and full pads on Saturday. I'm sure they are looking forward to that."
Coach Brown and his staff are still evaluating players and are keeping practices simple.
"We're still putting things in right now," Brown said. "We're not really working against each other yet. Right now, we're working on a few things for Baylor and Southern Miss. Starting tomorrow, we'll start working against each other more. We'll go back to a little bit more of a spring practice. They like to go against each other and I think they'll pick it up a little on Friday."
Freshman Corey White participated in his first practice as a Blazer after being cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse on Thursday. White is a 6-1 running back from Jess Lanier High School in Birmingham.
"Corey White was out there today. He's very talented at running back and it's good to have him out there."
UAB's first test will come on Saturday, Aug. 30 (6:00 p.m. CT) when it travels to Waco, Texas to meet Big XII Conference foe Baylor.
