BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB football team completed its second day of practice here Wednesday, fighting through mud and humid conditions during the three-hour session.
The Blazers were able to complete its first full practice of the season on Wednesday, compared to Tuesday when a thunderstorm cut short the late afternoon session.
"We have a lot of kids we need to look at, so we need all the practice time we can get," UAB head coach Watson Brown said. "Today we were able to get a better look at some of the younger guys. I think they are doing well right now, but the younger guys are getting close to the time when they need to show us they are picking it up."
One notable absence from the Blazers offensive line was that of second-year player Anthony Larry. Brown announced after Wednesday's practice that Larry, a 6-4, 320-pound offensive guard from New Orleans, La., will transfer to Southeastern Louisiana and will not play for UAB in 2003.
"I hate to see Anthony go," said Brown. "He started a bunch of games for us last year and helped out the offensive line. At the same time, I want my kids to be happy. If it's time to go, it is time to go."
However, Brown does not feel the loss of Larry will hurt the offensive line too much.
"We are deep at the offensive line position this year and that is a position where it's always good to be deep," said Brown. "We have several guys who are really impressing me and I think will turn out to be great players."
UAB will continue their workouts Thursday, again in the late afternoon.
The Blazers will open their 2003 season on Saturday, Aug. 30 (6:00 p.m. CT) when they travel to Waco, Texas to meet Big XII Conference foe Baylor.
