BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- With just one week remaining before the UAB Blazers 2003 football season begins with a game at Baylor, the team held a substitution scrimmage here Saturday morning on the UAB practice field. Head coach Watson Brown was pleased overall with the way the team worked through the kinks during what he termed as a "very important practice."
The practice began at 8:30 a.m. and lasted for two hours and 20 minutes. The team did not wear pads and came to the field in only shorts, jersey's and helmets. The team worked on offense, defense and special team scenarios throughout the session.
"I thought the scrimmage went good today," said Brown. "Organization is very important in football because there are so many bodies that do so many different things. We made some mistakes with it but I think it's good because the players now understand our procedure."
Along with scrimmage, the coaching staff went over the fine points of gameday such as the travel plans and how much time the team will have in the locker room prior to the start of a game.
With only a week before the Blazers kick off the 2003 season, Brown can see the sense of excitement and anticipation growing within his team.
"I think we need to play somebody," said Brown when asked about how the team is feeling towards the Baylor game. "We got to get our legs back and get focused on what Baylor does, or what we think they will do. It is really hard for us because it's a new staff, but that's what we got to do.
"We are going to have just a little bit of pad work on Tuesday, but basically we back it off now, get fresh and go play a game."
UAB kicks off the '03 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 30 (6:00 p.m. CT) when it travels to Waco, Texas to meet Big XII Conference foe Baylor.
