BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB football team prepared for its first scrimmage of the fall practice season, in mild conditions here on Monday. The Blazers' first game of the season at Baylor is on August 30, so the unseasonably cool weather here is on head coach Watson Brown's mind.
"I'm a little concerned," said Brown. "We had a couple of hot days, but this is really cool. Baylor has been practicing in temperatures around 100 degrees, so it's a little disturbing right now. We're really running the players extra to get that conditioning, but the heat is tough to get ready for."
Although the rain came during practice, forcing the team indoors for awhile, the coaching staff took some time to evaluate the freshmen.
"We got cut short a little bit today and missed our individual time, but we got our group work in," Brown said. "We ended practice with a lot of free work because we've had a hard time looking at our freshmen. We took a lot of those guys today and finished with three or four live series with them so we can go back and watch the tape."
The Blazers are keeping practice simple for now, allowing players to get used to things before trying to install a game plan. However, Coach Brown expects to start working on some specifics after the second scrimmage of the season on August 19.
UAB will continue their workouts Tuesday, again in the late afternoon before scrimmaging on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
The Blazers will open their 2003 season on Saturday, Aug. 30 (6:00 p.m. CT) when they travel to Waco, Texas to meet Big XII Conference foe Baylor.
