BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -----The UAB men's tennis team (9-12, 2-1 C-USA) fell to No. 14 Alabama (16-7, 3-6), 6-1, here on Wednesday afternoon.
"We fought hard today in some positions," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. When you play a top-20 team, you have to play well at every position. I thought we put together a decent effort. We had chances to win, with three matches going three sets, but could not get the job done."
The Crimson Tide quickly took the doubles point, winning the first two matches. In the No. 1 position, UA's Max Belski and Chris Gostek took an 8-5 win against Blazers Ivan Andreev and Andre Maier. At the No. 2 spot, the Crimson Tide's Stephen Mitchell and Christian Brodersen beat UAB's Kristijan Mitrovski and Patrick Suhrbier, 8-3.
The No. 3 tilt between Blazers Bastian Gruendler and Sanzaruz Zaman and Alabama's Brian Isern and Brad Friedman was stopped after the Tide had won the point.
In singles, UAB's Zaman recorded the Blazers' lone point in the No. 6 match, as he defeated UA's Isern, 6-4, 6-1.
Alabama's Belski defeated Blazer Gruendler at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 7-6. In the No. 2 spot, UAB's Andreev fell to the Tide's Mitchell, 6-4, 6-4.
The Blazers came close in three matches, battling to three sets, but lost all three. In the No. 3 match, UAB's Maier fell to Bama's Gostek, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. Blazer Mitrovski battled UA's Brodersen, but came up short in the tiebreaker, falling, 6-4, 6-7, 10-6, in the No. 4 tilt. In the No. 5 position, Michael Ray Pallares of Alabama beat UAB's Suhrbier, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1.
