Men's Tennis Gets Win At C-USA Championships

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - In the final match of the opening day at the Conference USA Championships, seventh-seed UAB (10-13, 3-1) snapped a three-match losing streak with a 4-1 win over East Carolina (8-12, 1-4).
The Blazers started off the match by winning the doubles point, as the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams were victorious for UAB. Blazers Andre Maier and Dino Mancarella were 8-6 winners over East Carolina's Paulo Baumer and Nick Rose, in the No. 2 tilt. At the No. 3 spot, UAB's Bastian Gruendler and Sanzaruz Zaman defeated Pirates Edwart Cooper and Filipe Fonseca, 8-5.
In the No. 1 doubles match, ECU's Charl Meyer and Brad Sullivan beat Blazers Kristijan Mitrovski and Patrick Suhrbier, 8-5.
In singles, UAB took the No. 1, No, 4 and No. 5 matches to clinch the victory. Blazer Gruendler was victorious over ECU's Sullivan, 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 1 slot. At No. 4 singles, UAB's Mitrovski was a 6-0, 7-6, winner over Pirate Cooper. In the No. 5 tilt, Blazer Suhrbier defeated ECU's Fonseca, 6-2, 6-2.
East Carolina claimed its only point with a win at the No. 2 spot when Meyer beat UAB's Ivan Andreev, 6-3, 6-2. The No. 3 and No. 6 matches were stopped after UAB claimed the win.
The Blazers take on second-seed TCU on Friday at 9 a.m. at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
