Men's Tennis Drops Two At Blue Gray College Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -----The UAB men's tennis team (8-9) fell to No. 13 North Carolina, 4-1, and No. 46 Notre Dame, 4-2, in its first day of competition at the 2003 Blue Gray Tennis Classic here on Friday afternoon.
The Blazers and UNC started play on Thursday afternoon, but the match was postponed, due to weather, until Friday morning.
The Tar Heels won the doubles match, taking the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. UNC's Greg Archer and Trystan Meniane defeated Blazers Bastian Gruendler and Kristijan Mitrovski, 8-3, in the No. 1 tilt. In the No. 3 position, UAB's Sanzaruz Zaman and Patrick Suhrbier were defeated by Tar Heels Geoff Boyd and Andy Metzler, 8-1. In the No. 2 match, the Blazers' Andre Maier and Dino Marcarella took on UNC's Nicholas Monroe and Daniel Pinchbeck, but the match was stopped after UNC won the point.
In singles play, UAB's lone win came at the No. 3 position as Mitrovski defeated 76th-ranked Pinchbeck, 6-0, 6-0.
The Blazers lost at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 positions. In the No. 1 position, UAB's Gruendler fell to 27th-ranked Meniane in a tight match, 7-6, 6-5. UNC's Monroe defeated Blazer Andre Maier, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 2 position. The No. 4 match and No. 6 matches were suspended when the match was decided.
Later in the afternoon, the Blazers were defeated by No. 46 Notre Dame, 4-2, after the Fighting Irish took the doubles point and won three of five singles matches.
Notre Dame took the doubles point, winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. In the No. 1 match, the Fighting Irish duo of Matt Scott and Brent D'Amico defeated UAB's Gruendler and Mitrovski, 8-4. Blazers Maier and Mancarella fell to Notre Dame's Louis Haddock and Brian Farrell, 8-5.
UAB's doubles win came in the No. 3 match when Zaman and Suhrbier defeated the Fighting Irish's Paul McNaughton and Nicolas Lopez, 8-4.
Blazer Gruendler was victorious at the No. 1 position, as he defeated Notre Dame's Haddock, 6-4, 6-4. UAB's Zaman beat the Fighting Irish's Eric Langenkamp, 6-4, 6-1.
Notre Dame won the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches to take the match. In the No. 3 slot, the Fighting Irish's D'Amico beat UAB's Mitrovski, 6-1, 6-1. Blazer Zrihen fell to Notre Dame's Farrell, 7-5, 6-0, at the No. 4 position. At the No. 5 position, Notre Dame's Lopez defeated UAB's Suhrbier, 6-4, 6-1.
The Blazers continue competition at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic on Saturday, March 16.
