BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB will play host to five opponents at Legion Field this fall, including a Sept. 6 contest against Conference USA foe Southern Mississippi, according to the Blazers' 2003 football schedule announced Friday.
UAB will play non-conference road games against Southeastern Conference opponents South Carolina (Sept. 20) and Georgia (Oct. 25) after opening its season Aug. 30 with a contest against Baylor at Waco, Texas. The Blazers will also play a non-league home game Sept. 13 versus Troy State, the second consecutive year the Trojans will visit Legion Field.
The remaining UAB home games set for 2003 will be C-USA matchups vs. Cincinnati (Oct. 11), Army (Nov. 1) and Tulane (Nov. 8). The Blazers' conference road games are at Memphis (Oct. 4), TCU (Oct. 18), first-year C-USA football member South Florida (Nov. 22) and Houston (Nov. 29).
With an eight-game Conference USA schedule and South Florida entering the league, the two C-USA schools not on UAB's schedule this coming season will be Louisville and East Carolina.
"I am excited about our schedule," said UAB Director of Athletics and head football coach Watson Brown. "It's a very difficult schedule. We have an excellent conference schedule and I think it's one of the better home schedules we have had. At the same time, our non-conference schedule with two Southeastern Conference opponents, one from the Big 12 and Troy State is extremely attractive and presents a great challenge for us."
Game times and television games will be announced at a later date.
2003 UAB Football Schedule: Aug. 30 at Baylor, Sept. 6 vs. Southern Miss, Sept. 13 vs. Troy State, Sept. 20 at South Carolina, Oct. 4 at Memphis, Oct. 11 vs. Cincinnati, Oct. 18 at TCU, Oct. 25 at Georgia, Nov. 1 vs. Army, Nov. 8 vs. Tulane, Nov. 22 at South Florida, and Nov. 29 at Houston.
