Lady Blazers Defeated By Tulsa, 80-70

COLUMBIA, Mo. --- The UAB women's basketball team (1-4) had a 35-33 halftime lead, but was outscored 12-2 by Tulsa (3-0) to open up the second half and was defeated by the Golden Hurricane, 80-70, here Friday night in the opening game of the Unilever Tiger Tournament hosted by the University of Missouri.
After being down by 13 points, 68-55, with 7:03 left in the game, the Lady Blazers fought back to within four points, 70-66, at the 4:26 mark. However, Tulsa was too much for UAB, as the Golden Hurricane finished the game on a 10-4 run.
UAB was led by freshman Brittany Smith, who tallied 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Freshman Crystal McFadden recorded 13 points, nine of which came in the second half, and four rebounds on the evening.
The Lady Blazers hit 42.4 percent of their shots in the first half, including an outstanding 5-of-9 from the three-point line. In the second half, shooting dropped for UAB, as they hit 15-of-38 shots for 39.5 percent, including only 25.0 percent from beyond the arc.
UAB's defense played well again, forcing Tulsa into 17 turnovers and picking the ball six times, however the Lady Blazers had 14 shots blocked by the Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa was led by Sarah Lundberg, who had 29 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the Golden Hurricane. Lundberg hit 12-of-14 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point land. Lundberg was one of four Tulsa players in double-digits, as the Golden Hurricane shot 51.7 percent from the floor.
UAB will play in the consolation game of the tournament on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. against the loser of the Alcorn State/Missouri game.
