Lady Blazers Fall to Arkansas State, 84-77

BROOKLYN, N.Y. --- The UAB women's basketball team (0-3) lost a tough game to Arkansas State (3-0), 84-77, here on Friday at the Long Island University Tournament. The Lady Blazers were led by New York native Carmen Guzman who recorded 19 points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes off the bench. Guzman shot 7-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
UAB's other New York natives made impacts as well. Freshman guard Crystal McFadden started her third game for the Lady Blazers, scoring 15 points, eight rebounds and two steals. In addition, freshman guard Brittany Smith tallied nine minutes, three offensive rebounds, two assists and two steals in her first collegiate start.
Arkansas State was led by freshman Rudy Sims who scored 25 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. ASU had four players score in double figures, as Amber Abraham had 13 and Ali Carter and Catriece Webster tallied 11 points each.
The Lady Indians shot 60.0 percent in the first half, hitting 15-of-25 shots from the floor and took a 41-32 lead into the locker room. UAB fought back to cut the lead to three, 66-63, with only 5:57 left to play. However, Arkansas State rallied to outscore the Lady Blazers, 18-14, the rest of the game.
Senior forward Natasha Thomas recorded her second-consecutive double-double, tallying 16 points and 12 rebounds in the game.
UAB will play in the consolation round on Saturday, Nov. 29, against Southern Illinois at 1 p.m. (ET).
