BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- UAB had split practice for the second day in a row due to rain caused by Tropical Storm Isidore. The Blazers' defense headed to Bell Gymnasium from 2-3:30 p.m., while the offense had meetings. At 3:30 p.m., the teams swapped places allowing the offense to run through their plays. UAB (1-3, 0-0) opens its Conference USA schedule against Memphis (2-2, 1-1) this Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at Legion Field. The weather has cost the Blazers two days of vital practice before taking on the Tigers.
"It's been tough being in this position," said head coach Watson Brown. "We haven't been able to get a lot of things done. We've been working on assignments. I'm a little worried about that, but maybe we'll be fresher because of it.
The Tigers come into the game with one of the best offenses they've had. Freshman tailback DeAngelo Williams has rushed for 401 yards in his first four games. Last week, Williams had a career-high 166 yards and a touchdown in Memphis' win over Tulane. Williams has rushed for 100 or more yards in three of the four games he has played in.
"Memphis has always been good on defense, and they still are, but this is one of the best Memphis offenses we've played," said Brown. "They are more of a complete team this year than in previous years. DeAngelo Williams is truly something special."
