BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - In a cloudy and unusually cool day for August in Alabama (temperature around 78 degrees), the UAB football team completed its first full-squad two-a-day practice after a two-hour afternoon session. The Blazers worked for about an hour and 50 minutes during the morning session.
Head coach Watson Brown was pleased with the practice, particularly with the effort and attitude of the team.
"It was a good practice," said Brown. "We've got great attitudes and work habits. The effort and the attitude is probably as good as I've had around here. It looked like a first practice however. We slowly started putting in things on both sides of the ball. Timing is always hard on the first day. It takes a little while to get the timing of everything down.
"We're athletic and we can run and there are a lot of positions that are very competitive. We are a little thin in some areas, but we are highly, highly competitive in a lot of positions."
The team concentrated on various position drills during each session and closed the afternoon workout with a thirty minute offense vs. defense drill. Notables from the offensive side of the ball included a move from defensive end to the offensive line by senior Tanner Allen, and true freshman running back and Vestavia Hills High School product Dan Burks seeing significant reps during the final drill. On defense, true freshman Sam Kendrick from Mortimer Jordan High School also had solid reps in the final drill of the day.
Two-a-day practices continue tomorrow with the morning session beginning at 8:45 a.m. and the afternoon workout starting at 4:45 p.m.
UAB opens the season Aug. 31 against the Florida Gators in Gainesville, Fla. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (ET) kickoff and will air live on a pay per view basis and will also air on a taped delay basis through the Sunshine Network.
