BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team began to look towards Florida in its two-hour and fifteen minute practice Thursday in helmets, shorts and shoulder pads. The coaching staff began to put things in place for the Blazers' Aug. 31 opener against the Gators in Gainesville, Fla.
"We started to implement a few things," said head coach Watson Brown. "We are slowly starting to put some stuff in. It's great that we have been able to get a head start on our game plan. The extra few days will really help us. We are starting to look at some of the things they (Florida) do as well."
Overall, Brown is happy about where the team is as they start to prepare for the trip to Gainesville.
"It is extremely hot out here, but in a lot of ways that is good for us, considering where our first game is. Hopefully, we'll start getting our legs back. It was a good practice overall today. We'll do some physical stuff Friday and then again on Tuesday, so we've got two pad days left. Beyond that we will be in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts, so we can let the players get their legs back and let them get mentally prepared."
Friday's practice, scheduled for 2:45 p.m., will be in full pads. Saturday, the team will hold a situation scrimmage in shorts at 8:30 a.m.
UAB will hold its 2002 football Fans Day Saturday from 4-6 p.m. at the UAB mini-park. Fans are invited to come and meet the 2002 Blazer football team.
UAB opens the season Aug. 31 against the nationally-ranked Florida Gators in Gainesville, Fla. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (ET) kickoff and will air live on a pay per view basis and will also air on a taped delay basis through the Sunshine Network.
