"I thought Moncur and Burks were outstanding today," said Brown. "We also had some freshman receivers and defensive players play well, but those two running backs stood out the most."
"The scrimmage is about what I thought it would be," said Brown. "The first team went in a couple of series, but mainly we wanted to focus on the younger guys so we could take a better look at them. The first-teamers were not really into the scrimmage, but then again, it's hard to get into a scrimmage when you play just one or two series."
The scrimmage opened with a concentration on the kicking game and return specialists. Roddy Williams set the tone for special teams on the afternoon with a 89-yard kick off return for a touchdown. The kickers also looked impressive as redshirt sophomore Nick Hayes connected on 6-of-7 field goals, with his only miss coming from 53-yards away. Ross Stewart and Parker Mullins each boomed 50-yard punts on the day. Stewart punted five times for an average of 43.4 yards per kick, while Mullins, a true freshman, averaged 40.5 yards per kick on six punts.
"I thought we got a lot out of the kicking scrimmage," said Brown. "The younger kids got plenty of work today and fought hard. They need to fight hard because they all are battling for playing time this season."
On the offense side of the ball, Falany completed 9-of-17 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. Senior Thomas Cox also had a good day as he went 4-of-8 for 34 yards and rushed six times for 48 yards and a score. Senior T.J. Simmons led all receivers with four receptions for 48 yards.
Burks scored once, while Moncur matched Burks with eight rushes for 33 yards. Freshman Bryan Buckner also looked impressive, carrying the ball four times for 48 yards.
UAB begins classes Wednesday, August 21, therefore, the football team having just one practice at 2:40 p.m.
