BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The UAB football team went through a pair of workouts Saturday and will enjoy a much-needed day off Sunday.
Following Saturday's practices, the Blazers now have just one day left with two workouts, that coming on Monday. On Tuesday, UAB will scrimmage for the second time this preseason.
"We don't always go twice the day after a scrimmage, it just depends," said head coach Watson Brown. "But we lost a two-a-day before the scrimmage last week and we needed to make it up.
Despite the tendency for the Blazers to be tired after Friday's scrimmage, Brown said they came out with enthusiasm and energy for Saturday's drills.
"This was a good day all the way around, we had two very good practices even though I know they were sore," he said. "Maybe, they were just excited about the day off (Sunday) but I was pleased with the effort today."
Brown said his offense spent a significant portion of Saturday's afternoon practice in full pads working on blitzing situations while the defense concentrated on containing long yardage plays.
The Blazers also worked for a large part of the practice on their punt protection and punt block efforts.
The UAB football players will enjoy the off day on Sunday, but several members of the Blazer coaching and football support staff will be participating in a special "UAB Football: A Gridiron Classroom" session. The event, which will be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in the Green & Gold Room of Bartow Arena, will give fans an inside look at the Blazer football program - from discussion on game strategy to equipment to conditioning and several other subjects. The "Gridiron Classroom" is being presented by UAB Special Studies.
The Blazers will open their 2002 season in Gainesville, Fla. against the nationally-ranked Florida Gators on August 31, with kickoff slated for 5 p.m. CT. SportsChannel Florida will televise the contest on a pay-per-view basis. The game will also air on a taped delay basis through the Sunshine Network.
