BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- After a morning and afternoon session, the UAB football team wrapped up its second day of full pad workouts. According to UAB head coach Watson Brown, practice went well although there were some injuries. Two of the more key injuries were to offensive guard Andy Galloway, who injured his left ankle, while center Matt Batusic hurt his left shoulder, however, Brown does not think either injury is serious.
"We have a lot of offensive lineman grabbing something and limping around," Brown said. "None of the injuries are serious but we need to get them back on the field. That is one area on our team where we could not afford injuries. We have been very physical with the players and we have to stay that way for another week, then we will slow it up. We are just hopeful there are no more injuries."
The practice ended with a 25-minute non-contact scrimmage. The offense and defense worked on set plays and two minute drills which gave the coaching staff a chance to get a better look at some of the players.
"The defense looked great today against the run but I have not been thrilled with them against the pass," said Brown. "On the offensive side, the pass protection was very good. I believe we are throwing a lot better than we ever did last year."
"Both the punters and the placekickers have been doing a great job, including the backups", said Brown.
UAB will only have one practice tomorrow afternoon beginning at 3:45 p.m.
The Blazers will open their 2002 season in Gainesville, Fla. against the nationally-ranked Florida Gators on August 31, with kickoff slated for 5 p.m. CT. SportsChannel Florida will televise the contest on a pay-per-view basis. The game will also air on a taped delay basis through the Sunshine Network.
