Men's Tennis Tops Southern Miss at C-USA Championship

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sixth-seeded UAB defeated ninth-seeded Southern Miss 4-2 at Seneca Park Saturday on the third day of the 2002 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship.
The format of the match was altered due to weather conditions. The singles matches were played first, doubles followed if needed. The doubles point was not played.
In singles, Southern Miss jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Uwe Gneiting edged Ivan Andreev 7-6, 6-4 at No. 5 and Nicolas Carteret defeated Rusty Walker 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6.
UAB came right back with an answer as Andre van der Merwe defeated David Jansson 7-6, 6-3 at No. 1 and Alex Jung defeated Southern Miss' Juanjo Martin 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. At the No. 4 spot, Blazer Sanzaruz Zaman outlasted Davic Canudas 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(7-4), while Tobi Klein clinched the match for UAB with his 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 win over Miikka Kangas at No. 2.
UAB will face the winner of the DePaul/Memphis match for fifth place in league standings Sunday at 9:00 a.m. at Seneca.
