HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior Christina Gushanas shot an opening round 74 to lead the Blazers to a sixth place finish on day one of the 2002 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship at the 5,935-yard, par-72 Hattiesburg Country Club.
The Blazers opened the tournament with a 305, fifteen shots off the pace of South Florida who fired an opening round 290 to lead the field. Tulane is just one shot back in second with 291 followed by Memphis (295), TCU (298), Louisville (304), ECU (306), Southern Miss (306) and Cincinnati (325).
Gushanas carded a 36 on the front nine and followed it up with a 38, good enough to put her in a tie for 11th.
South Florida's Katie Ruhe and Louisville's Linsay Hulwick shot identical nines with 34-36 to lead the event with a 2-under par 70. Tulane's Kelly Martin and TCU's Brooke Tull are tied for third with 71.
Freshman Brooke Mangan sits in 18th place after posting a 75. Mangan came to the turn with a 1-under par 35, but scrambled to shoot 40 on the back.
Also for the Blazers, freshman Marika Pluta finished the day with 77 to put her in a tie for 24th, while senior Heather Lourie carded a 79 for a share of 31st. Junior Jenni Elmore rounded out the Blazer squad with 80.
Second round action will continue Saturday morning.
