Men's Tennis Wins Opening Match at C-USA Championship

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Sixth-seeded UAB men's tennis team defeated eleventh-seeded Marquette 4-0 in the first round of the 2002 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center Thursday.
The 67th-ranked Blazers (14-8, 5-0 C-USA) took the all-important doubles point to take the early 1-0 lead. UAB's 28th-ranked tandem of Tobi Klein and Alex Jung knocked off Marquette's Raj Gill and Justin Holsen, 8-1 at the No. 1 slot. At the No. 3 position, UAB's Ivan Andreev and Sanzaruz Zaman teamed up to defeat Mark Thomas and Kent Davies, 8-6.
In singles action, Jung topped Holsen 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3, Zaman defeated Thomas 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 and Dubrava beat Davies 6-1, 6-4 at the five-spot for the Blazers' 4-0 win.
In other first-round action, ninth-seeded Southern Miss upended No. 8 Charlotte 4-3.
UAB will play No. 2 seed South Florida Friday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center in an 8 a.m. tilt. Marquette will face No. 8 seed Charlotte in the consolation draw Friday Seneca Park.
