CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 53rd ranked UAB men's tennis team has gotten solid play out of its doubles teams all year, and the all-important point was yet again the difference as the Blazers pulled out a 4-3 win over Conference USA foe Charlotte Friday at Davidson College.
The Blazers (12-5, 4-0 C-USA) swept all three doubles matches and won three of the six singles contests to remain perfect against C-USA foes. UAB has now won three of its last four matches.
In doubles play, the UAB quickly got the momentum thanks to the 35th-ranked tandem of Alex Jung and Tobi Klein. The No. 1 duo defeated Ola Jonsson and Joakim Peterson 8-5, and the Blazers continued the run when the George Dubrava and Andre van der Merwe defeated Charlotte's Marlo Santoso and Jonathan McGovern.
Sanzaruz Zaman and Ivan Andreev made it three straight with an 8-5 win over Jacob Nordwall and Jess Rutledge.
In singles play, Charlotte rallied with wins at the No.1 and 2 slots. But the bottom of the Blazer lineup came through, with wins at No. 3, 5 and 6. Sanzaruz Zaman clinched the match for UAB with a three-set win over David Bolin, including an impressive 6-1 triumph in the third set.
UAB will get back in action at 10 a.m. Saturday against Davidson.
