BIRMINGHAM - The UAB men's tennis team blanked Jacksonville State 7-0 Tuesday afternoon at the Lakeshore Foundation Tennis Center.
The Blazers (10-4, 2-0 in Conference USA) started out strong winning all three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. UAB's tandem of Andre van der Merwe and George Dubrava defeated Ruben Herera and Arthuro Neito 8-3 at the No. 1 position, while Alex Jung and Jean-Pierre De Lange defeated Rafeal Rodriguez and Nick Utley 8-2 at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 position, Sanzaruz Zaman and Rusty Walker defeated Toby Bourke and Matthew Davis 8-3.
In singles, the Blazers captured wins in the 1-5 spots in straight sets. At the No. 1 spot, van der Merwe managed a 6-4, 6-0 win over Herrera. UAB's Jung defeated Neito 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 2 position, while Dubrava won 6-2, 6-4 over JSU's Rodriguez.
The Bottom half of UAB's line-up captured three wins, pushing the Blazers to the easy win over the Gamecocks. At the No. 4 spot, Ivan Andreev defeated Utley 6-3, 6-1. Walker defeated JSU's Bourke 6-2, 6-1, while De Lange won 8-1 in a pro-type match.
The Blazers will be back on the court on March 24 when they host Vanderbilt in a 1 p.m. match-up at the Lakeshore Foundation Tennis Facility.
