UAB head football coach Watson Brown was excited about the Blazers' first day in pads, but said the Thursday practice was a typical first day as the play was ?aggressive but ragged.?
?It looked like a typical first day. The kids were aggressive and had great effort, but there were the typical mistakes,? Brown said.
?I can't wait to get in there and see the tape of today's practice. I love the first day in pads. I like to see who got bigger and stronger in the off-season,? said Brown.
The Blazers are trying to replace nine starters on offense and have seven returning on offense. Brown said that fact showed itself today. ?The defensive guys have to grow up. They got knocked around pretty good today.?
The Blazers have now had three days of practice. They will work out in pads again Friday afternoon. The team will take the weekend off and practice Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of next week before taking off for spring break.
*Cornerback Jason Southall, of Midfield, has missed this week of practice due to the death of his mother Bettye Southall. He has been moved from wide receiver to cornerback this spring to give the Blazers more depth at that position.
He is expected to return to the team next week. The funeral for his mother is Saturday in Thomasville, Ala.
