UAB head football coach Watson Brown said that Wednesday's practice was not as good as Monday's first day since the players were having to learn a lot more of the system.
?Today was not as good a day,? Brown said. ?We put more stuff in today and that confused them some. They looked like young guys today. The more stuff we put in the more they looked confused.?
Brown is excited about the next practice Thursday when the Blazers practice in pads for the first time. ?I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. It should be a lot of fun when we put on the pads for the first time,? said Brown. The Blazers worked in shorts both Monday and Wednesday.
Brown and his offensive staff have moved Jeff Tippetts back to quarterback. He played tight end last season and spent Monday at running back. Tippets originally came to UAB as a quarterback out of Jacksonville High School. ?We can't wait much longer at the quarterback spot. We've got to have another quarterback ready. It looks like Matt Johnson may not be able to throw until after spring break and so we had to get another guy back there.?
Johnson, a junior from Selma's Meadowview Christian High, is still recovering from shoulder surgery on his right shoulder. Spring break is in two weeks. UAB will practice Thursday and Friday in pads and work three days next week before taking the break.
