UAB head football coach Watson Brown said, ?it was a very good day,? as the Blazers opened spring practice Monday afternoon.
?There are three things you can see in shorts ? quickness, assignments and effort,? Brown said. ?I saw good quickness on both sides of the ball. For the most part the players were picking up their assignments and there was really good effort out there. The guys were really trying hard.?
UAB went in shorts the Monday and will practice in shoulder pads and helmets Tuesday. The Blazers will put on the pads Thursday and Friday.
?It's hard to tell about individuals before you put the pads on. We will be able to tell a little more tomorrow with shoulder pads. But, you really need to put the pads on to tell who is stepping up.?
Quarterback Thomas Cox comes into spring as the starter and is being challenged by redshirt freshman Darrell Hackney. The Blazers have switched wide receiver Jason Southall back to defensive back and safety Maurice Gallery to running back.
?The best thing I saw today is the kids are trying hard and that is the most you can ask of the first day,? said Brown.
