CHICAGO ----- Three UAB football players have been named to the 2002 All-Conference USA second team, according to an announcement by the league office Wednesday.
Senior defensive back Chris Brown, senior center Kirk Tuck and sophomore linebacker Zac Woodfin were all selected to the second-team unit in a vote of the league's head coaches and two media representatives from each school. This is the first time Brown, Tuck and Woodfin have been honored with all-conference recognition.
In addition, quarterback Darrell Hackney and safety Julius Wainwright were tabbed to the conference's All-Freshman Team for the 2002 season. UAB completed its campaign last Saturday with 31-23 loss at Cincinnati to finish with a 5-7 overall mark, 4-4 in league play.
Brown, a native of Atlanta and one of only two returning defensive starters for the Blazers this season, was UAB's top defensive back performer throughout the '02 campaign. He finished the season with a career-high 87 tackles and a career-best four interceptions. He also returned a fumble 91 yards for a touchdown against Troy State and blocked two kicks.
Tuck, from nearby Pelham, Ala., was the Blazers' top offensive lineman and one of the team's leaders. He has been a starter on the UAB offensive line since the midway point of his sophomore season.
After seeing limited duty as a true freshman in 2001, Woodfin is quickly emerging as one of Conference USA's top linebackers. Starting all 12 contests this season, the Prattville, Ala. product set a UAB single-season record for most tackles with 120 (including 74 solo) and ranked No. 2 among Conference USA defenders in tackles for loss with 18 (-48 yards). Woodfin also recorded five sacks and a pair of interceptions during the 2002 season.
Hackney, from Atlanta, is one of the brightest young performers in Conference USA. After taking over UAB's starting signal-caller duties in the fifth game, Hackney became one of the league's most productive quarterbacks. The 6-2, 230-pound QB completed the season with a UAB Division I-A record 1,977 yards passing and 14 touchdowns. His 424-yard performance against East Carolina last month was a season-best among C-USA quarterbacks this fall.
Wainwright, from Tuscaloosa, Ala., started seven games this season in the Blazer secondary. He finished the season with 40 tackles, including 27 solo hits.
